Why use a paper filter?

When brewing espresso or any type of coffee without a paper filter, the finest coffee grounds can migrate towards the holes in the filter basket (for espresso) or settle at the bottom of the cup, potentially obstructing water flow and leading to a muddy cup. A paper filter helps prevent these issues, ensuring smoother water flow for a given grind size.

Additionally, a paper filter protects the showerhead in an espresso machine from coffee sediments, which is particularly important for machines equipped with solenoid valves.
